Alternatives to a steak day

Stabilizing on the HCG diet can be incredibly frustrating. One day you're down half a pound and the next day you're up 3/4 of a pound. Sometimes one type of cheese makes you gain and a different type doesn't. Unlike phase 2, where stepping on the scale was rewarding and exciting, weigh-ins for phase 3 can be disappointing and stressful.

I can relate to the frustration. After my first round of HCG, going into maintenance was a breeze. I ate healthy and exercised and even lost 5 lbs.

 Maybe it was naive of me to assume my second round of maintenance was going to be the same. Imagine my surprise when I stepped on the scale this morning to find that I'm up 2.2 lbs from my Phase 2 ending weight.

Dr. Simeons' protocol states that the morning you see a gain over 2 lbs to do a steak day. Well, steak days aren't always possible. For instance, this morning I didn't have any steak. And what if you're like my friend Ali who is doing the diet and doesn't eat steak.

I've heard of some alternatives to the traditional steak day, but I wanted to see for myself what options were out there. Alternatives to steak days are often called correction days. From the research I did, it seems like the egg day is the most common and the one that people seemed to see the best results with.

What is a steak day?
The day you see you've gained over 2 lbs from your Phase 2 ending weight, you eat nothing for breakfast or lunch. For dinner you have a large steak (no weight is specified, but I'm assuming 10 oz or more), and either a raw apple or a raw tomato. Water is to be consumed in large quantities throughout the day.

What are the alternatives?
Egg Day- For this, you eat 10 eggs through the day. You can cook them however you please, just avoid adding too many toppings. During an egg day you should also drink a lot of water.

High Protein Day- This alternative has a little more variety than the egg day. For breakfast you eat two eggs. Lunch you eat 6 oz of chicken and a green vegetable. For dinner you can either eat 6 oz of steak or fish with a green vegetable. This purpose of this day is to keep things simple, avoid toppings and dairy.

Steak & Cheese Day- This is for people who aren't quite over the 2 lb mark but are headed there. For breakfast you eat two eggs, for lunch you eat a huge steak, for dinner you eat a large helping of cheese.

Notice the trend?
It seems like the key to Phase 3 correction days is high protein. Have you tried a correction day that isn't listed here? Did it work for you?

  1. i know this is from forever ago and you may not see it, but I'm going to post anyway. steak days tend to not work well for me. But i work full time and can't figure out how to do another one of these day. If I planned right, I could do a high protein day. That may be on the plan for tomorrow. UGH. This is too hard.

    1. You can do it! It's not too hard. The egg day would probably be your best option. :) It's pretty straight forward. 10 eggs throughout the day, lots of water.

  2. You can do it! Egg Day is MUCH easier than waiting all day for a BIG steak. I did my first egg day yesterday, I'm on Phase 3 and struggling to keep a study weight. I'm down 3 lbs from yesterday, Yay! I'm going for a 2nd Egg Day today, as I was up 5 lbs since I've stopped the dropped.

  3. hi just wanted to know if you eat 10 whole eggs or a mixture of whole egg & whites like one whole and 2 whites.

  4. i find having white coffee all day helps (real coffee)
    and a steak and apple at night.
    but the other day I had 2 apples all day and I was not
    hungary.

  6. You eat a huge fatty steak :-). You can also do a chicken thigh day--eat up to 7 chicken thighs (including skin) beginning at lunch. Another alternative is a chicken day--roast a big chicken and again you can begin eating it at lunch time. Begin with the dark meat (and eat the skin too).

  8. Just found your site and I am SUPER excited. I went to a "medical clinic" to get my HCG and they are totally clueless as to how to transition off of the diet. This site was/is SO helpful!!!!
    So many of my questions were answered. I don't own a scale. Years ago I was anorexic and I still get that old panicky feeling sometimes when I step on the scale...I judge my lack of progress. So, I've just been going by my clothes. After 40 days, I'm down 2 pant sizes and totally excited. Time for a break now and I was so apprehensive about transitioning...but now I'm not. Thank you for all of this information!!!

  9. I'm sooooo frustrated! I'm in Phase 4 of HCG, and am now having the hardest time stabilizing! I gained 7 lbs since my last LIW, and yesterday was my second steak day in a row, with only a 4 lbs loss in 2 days! It's obvious that the Steak Day just doesn't work for me. I am trying the egg day today after reading your post, so wish me luck! Any advice on tips for stabilizing in Phase 4?

  10. Hello Everyone, yesterday was my 3rd day doing a correction day trying to loose the last 3 lbs to get back to my LIW. Unfortunately the egg day didn't work for me either :(. I'm afraid if I eat regular today I will gain. Should I try to do another correction day, or just suck it up and try to stabilize the weight I am today 130 lbs vs LIW 127 lbs.

  11. This page saved me as I was on my way to buy a steak this morning. I was not looking forward to it, as my last steak day was rough. I've already had 1 hard boiled egg. Yay. Thanks so so much for sharing this info. Last steak day I lost 3.8, so I'm curious how different this will be for me.

  13. I did a steak day yesterday with two pork chops and a tomato instead of a steak b/c steak just wasn't an option and I lost all but .04 of the 3 lbs I had gained when I woke up yesterday.

  14. HI I just found your blog. I did a 28 day cycle injections w B12and only llost 6lbs. After thanksgiving I gained 3 back. I can not figure out why its not working for me. Also, I ate some white rice and cheese today, before I saw your site. Should I start over? Thanks

    1. I am menopausal, so I'm not losing as much as I'd like. However, I'm seeing a loss in inches. I am completing 21 days as of tomorrow and I've only lost 10. It's more than I was able to lose without HCG, so I'm happy. I stalled twice, but immediately did a steak day and lost 1.4 lbs. I am out of my injections and my new shipment hasn't arrived, so I'm forced to take a break and just restart. I'm not sure how to do that. Do I go through the several weeks of stabilization, or do I just jump right back in as soon as my supplies arrive?

  15. Steak days work for me, but they are hard. It started that feeling of extreme hunger I felt on teh very first day. Now I can't seem to shake that feeling. I will try the egg day. It seem smuch more doable since you don't have to go without all day before eating. Thanks!

  18. I have gained about 7 pounds since my last weight in and i wanted to know if i can do 2 steak days in a row and then eggs days until i am back down to my last weight in?

    1. Just do one steak day and see where you're at, then if you need to do another one you can. But as soon as you are within two pounds just get back on track.

    2. Ok. Can i alternate each alternatives until im within the 2 pounds? Also, does it matter the size of the egg for the egg day?

  19. Sounds like a lot of info flowing. Hope someone can help me. Day 19 of phase 1 and I have gained 1 lb yesterday. I should be loosing. Any help welcome

  20. I'm day four of my maintenance phase. Day two I had to already do a steak day. The steak day brought me back down to 1 pound over. Today is day four, and I am so disheartened because now I am five over. We can't afford for me to keep buying steaks! So I had three eggs for breakfast. Also I realized that my period should come any moment now. How much of those 5 pounds might be period related?

    1. Hi Susan,
      The entire five pounds could be water related. I know it is disheartening but keep sticking with Phase 2. By day 3 or 4 of your period you should release any water retention you have and you should go back down.

  21. TO AVOID A LOOMING STEAK DAY:
    I have found this formula works well. My HCG Coach gave it to me.
    Drink LOTS of water.
    Don't eat until lunch. Have a whole Can of Tuna (Water packed) or Chicken (not canned) with Mayo (Hellman's Real Mayo) on lettuce or celery for lunch, Have a big portion of protein for dinner with a small salad and a 0-1 Carbohydrate dressing.

  23. Hi Brit it is important you maintain the set weight ( weight you were when you stopped the drops). Often I am spot on but the odd time the scale starts creeping up so I just do a Tuna Day because it is healthier and I can handle it better. It usually brings me down to that set weight and I am good to go.( Never exceed the two pounds do the this IMMEDIATLY the same day your up ) It works because more calories were eaten the day prior. The body responds using up the reduced calories from the Steak Day ( Or Tuna day) quickly and corrects the hypothalamus you should be good the next day. Works every time for me. Then I just resume watching my calorie intake . I like to use FITNESS PAL to track my calories ( it's free and keeps me honest ) I did make the mistake of eating too few calories so watch that. Hope that helps. :)

  24. PS: For me I think it will be for life. Not sure about others. I just don't want to go down that road of gaining. NP Dr. also gave me adrenal support called Relora. You might want to research that.
